For December to March 2027, book nine to fifteen months ahead. Peak cabins and every festive charter sell that far out, because the Raja Ampat sailing season only runs October to April and most vessels leave the region for the rest of the year. Shoulder dates in October, November and April stay open far longer and cost less.
Raja Ampat availability behaves unlike most destinations. There is no low-season price war, because in the low season the boats are simply not there. Supply is fixed, short and seasonal — which means the constraint you are booking against is capacity, not demand-driven pricing.

The mid-year gap is the part people underestimate. Boats reposition to other Indonesian regions when the Raja Ampat season closes, so a July enquiry is not a matter of finding a good deal — it is a matter of finding a boat at all. If your leave is fixed to mid-year, the honest conversation is about a different destination or a private charter arranged well in advance.
Why do festive dates cost so much more?
Three reasons stack up. Crew work through Christmas and New Year and are paid accordingly. Provisioning and logistics cost more across the Indonesian holiday period. And demand for a fixed number of cabins spikes hard, with families booking a year or more out for dates that cannot move.
Expect a meaningful premium over the same itinerary in early December or late January, and expect terms to be firmer: larger deposits, earlier balance dates, tighter cancellation windows. What do deposits and payment schedules look like?
Norms across the Indonesian charter market:
- Deposit of roughly 25–50% to confirm a cabin, higher for whole-boat charter.
- Balance due typically 60–90 days before departure.
- Cancellation terms tightening as departure approaches, with deposits often non-refundable inside a defined window.
- Government fees — the marine park permit and regency visitor ticket, around IDR 1,700,000 combined for foreigners as of July 2026 — usually collected separately, often in cash at boarding.

Should you book the boat or the flights first?
The boat. Always the boat.
Cabins on good vessels for peak dates are scarce; airline seats to Sorong are not. If you book flights first and then discover your preferred boat is full for that week, you are choosing between a worse vessel and a change fee. Reverse the order and the problem disappears.

What if your dates are already full?
Five workable options, roughly in order of how often they solve the problem:
- Shift by a week. Availability in Raja Ampat is lumpy. The week either side of a full departure is frequently open.
- Change cabin grade. Twins and lower-deck cabins sell first on dive-led trips; a deluxe may still be open. Our cabin types guide explains what you are actually buying.
- Go shoulder season. October, November and April deliver the same reefs with fewer boats and softer rates.
- Change trip length. Seven-night departures are the most contested. A five-night or a longer expedition may have space — the 7D6N package and the 11-night expedition rarely fill at the same rate.
- Take a waitlist. Cancellations happen, particularly at the 90-day balance date. A waitlist costs nothing.
What we would not recommend is compromising on the operator to keep the date. The boat and the crew determine the quality of the week far more than the exact calendar slot does.
Does booking early actually save money?
Sometimes, and less than in other markets. Early-bird discounts exist but tend to be modest, because operators know the peak weeks will sell regardless. The real benefit of booking early is not price — it is choice: the cabin you want, the vessel you want, the itinerary you want, on the dates you want.
Where you genuinely save money is the shoulder season. October, November and April frequently carry lower rates, fewer boats at the popular sites, and the same water temperatures of 27–30 °C.
