5D4N Raja Ampat Sailing Package — Short Trip, Full Highlights

A 5D4N Raja Ampat sailing package covers the Dampier Strait and the Fam Islands — and honestly, nothing else. Four nights aboard from Sorong (SOQ) is enough for Cape Kri, Manta Sandy, Arborek, Melissa’s Garden and the Piaynemo viewpoint, plus Kabui Bay if the tides cooperate. It is not enough for Misool or Wayag, and any operator promising those on four nights is rewriting the schedule later. Indicative cost: roughly USD 250–400 per person per night on mid-range vessels, USD 600–700 on boutique yachts, plus about IDR 1,700,000 in government fees.

Short Raja Ampat trips have a bad reputation among liveaboard purists, and some of that is fair. Four nights is not a diving expedition. But it is a very good holiday, and for travellers who cannot take three weeks off work it is the difference between seeing Raja Ampat and not seeing it. The trick is choosing a route that respects the clock rather than one that pretends the clock does not exist.

What does the day-by-day schedule look like?

DayWhere you areActivitySailing hours
Day 1Sorong (SOQ) → Dampier StraitAirport transfer, board late morning, lunch under way, afternoon check dive or snorkel at Friwen Wall4 – 6
Day 2Dampier StraitCape Kri at slack, Sardine Reef, Mioskon; sunset at anchor near Kri1 – 2
Day 3Manta Sandy → ArborekManta cleaning station on the viewing line, Arborek jetty snorkel and village walk, Yenbuba in the afternoon1 – 3
Day 4Fam IslandsDawn at the Piaynemo staircase viewpoint, Melissa’s Garden, Penemu lagoon; overnight leg toward Sorong3 – 6
Day 5Sorong (SOQ)Early breakfast, disembark, transfer to airport for afternoon flights

The schedule is deliberately front-loaded. Sorong to the Dampier Strait is four to six hours of motor-sailing, so day one buys you an afternoon in the water rather than a wasted day. Internal moves through the central cruising ground run one to six hours and mostly happen over lunch or a surface interval. The single overnight leg is on the final night, heading home, which is when you least mind sleeping through it.

Fee figures are as of July 2026 and confirmed at booking — they are set by government bodies, not by us. Children under twelve are generally exempt from the marine park permit. Raja Ampat is a network of regionally managed marine protected areas rather than a national park, which is why there are two separate charges instead of one. Our charter cost breakdown goes through every line, and permits explained covers the paperwork.

What will we not promise on four nights?

Wayag. Misool. Both are physically possible to touch and neither is possible to do well. Wayag requires two overnight repositioning legs and sits nine nights minimum on our schedules; Misool is normally reached on nine- to twelve-night trips. Squeezing either into four nights means a day and a half of your holiday spent staring at open water and one rushed morning at the destination.

We would rather sell you a great four nights in the Dampier Strait than a mediocre four nights spent in transit. If Wayag or Misool is the point of your trip, the 11-night ultimate expedition is the honest product.

How should I plan flights around a 4-night trip?

Sorong’s airport uses the IATA code SOQ. You will see “DEO” written locally — that is the airport’s name abbreviation (Domine Eduard Osok), not the booking code. Approximate flight times: Jakarta (CGK) four to four and a half hours non-stop, frequently overnight or via a transit; Makassar (UPG) about two hours; Manado (MDC) roughly one and a half to two hours. Garuda, Batik Air, Lion Air and Citilink all serve Sorong, though schedules change often enough that we do not print flight numbers.

Two rules that save trips. Arrive the night before. A same-morning connection from Jakarta that misses puts you on the dock watching the boat leave. Leave a buffer day at the end, especially if you have an international flight out of Jakarta — an afternoon Sorong departure plus a domestic leg does not comfortably reach a late-evening long-haul. Guests who want a land night either side can take the Sorong to Waisai fast ferry (about two hours; published tickets IDR 250,000 VIP and IDR 125,000 economy, usually two sailings a day — confirm locally). Full logistics on Sorong departures.

Who is a 5D4N package right for?

It suits travellers with limited leave, first-time visitors who want to test whether Raja Ampat is for them, snorkel-led groups and families, couples adding four nights onto a Bali or Jakarta trip, and divers who would rather log twelve good dives close together than sail long distances.

It suits less well photographers chasing the Wayag landscape, experienced divers who have already dived the Dampier Strait, and anyone prone to seasickness who wants to minimise transits — ironically, the short trip has proportionally more transit than a seven-night one.

Frequently asked questions

Is four nights really worth flying to Raja Ampat for?

If the alternative is not going, yes. You will get roughly twelve dives or four full snorkelling days at world-class sites, the Piaynemo viewpoint and a village visit. What you will not get is the sense of remoteness that longer trips deliver.

How many dives are included?

Typically three per day on days two to four plus a check dive on arrival — around twelve in total. Night dives are usually optional and sometimes chargeable.

Can non-divers join this trip?

Yes, and this route is well suited to them. Friwen Wall, Arborek, Yenbuba and Melissa’s Garden are all shallow. See our snorkelling sailing trip.

What is the best time of year for a short trip?

October to April, with December to March the peak. Short trips are more exposed to a single bad weather day than long ones, so the settled heart of the season is worth paying for.

Can we charter the whole boat for four nights?

Yes. Whole-vessel charter starts from around USD 4,500 per night for smaller Phinisi and motor yachts. For a group of eight to twelve this is often competitive with individual cabins. See private Phinisi charter.

Are the fees payable in cash?

Usually yes, in rupiah, and often collected by the vessel before departure. Bring cash to Sorong — ATM access on the islands is unreliable.

What water temperature should I expect?

Around 27–30 °C year-round with visibility commonly 15 to 30 metres or more. A 3 mm wetsuit is comfortable for most guests over three dives a day.

Will we see manta rays?

Manta Sandy is a genuine reef manta cleaning station and encounter rates through the peak months are high, but no operator can guarantee wildlife. Anyone who does is selling you something they do not control.
