Triton Bay is a private-charter or crossing extension, not a scheduled Raja Ampat product — and we would rather say so than sell you a schedule that does not exist. Sitting off Kaimana, roughly 300 nautical miles south-east of Sorong, it is reached either on a repositioning crossing or on a chartered voyage built around it. Allow 10 to 14 nights for a combined Raja Ampat and Triton Bay expedition. What you get for the distance: the densest soft coral in Indonesia, world-class muck and macro, and whale sharks around the local fishing platforms.
Most sites in Indonesia are known for one thing. Triton Bay is known for three that rarely coexist — soft-coral walls thick enough to hide the rock, black-water-style macro in nutrient-rich green water, and habituated whale sharks that come to the bagan fishing platforms for the baitfish. It is also genuinely hard to reach, which is the main reason so few people have dived it.
Why is Triton Bay not a scheduled product?
Geography and economics. Kaimana sits far outside the Raja Ampat cruising triangle, so a vessel visiting Triton Bay is not on a loop — it is on a one-way journey that has to end somewhere. That works for two kinds of trip: a repositioning crossing that was heading south anyway, or a private charter where the group is paying for the vessel’s time regardless of the route.
Anything else is marketing. If you find a site advertising weekly scheduled Triton Bay departures out of Sorong, look closely at the dates before you believe it. Kofiau and Batanta sit in the same category for the same reason: real destinations, but bespoke rather than scheduled. What is Triton Bay known for?
- Soft coral density. The walls and pinnacles around Aiduma and Namatota carry soft coral in a density that reads as excessive in photographs. Visibility is often lower than Raja Ampat — this is nutrient-rich water — and that nutrient load is exactly why the coral is so extravagant.
- Whale sharks at the bagan platforms. Local fishing platforms attract juvenile whale sharks that come for baitfish spill. Encounters are frequently long and close, in shallow water, and are among the most reliable in Indonesia — though “reliable” is never “guaranteed”, and platform positions move.
- Macro and muck. Walking sharks (epaulette), pygmy seahorses, frogfish, nudibranchs and a steady stream of oddities. Photographers with a macro rig lose whole days here happily.
- Emptiness. Traffic is a fraction of Raja Ampat’s. Many days you will see no other dive vessel at all.

How long are the passages?
Long enough to plan around. From Sorong, reaching Triton Bay means an overnight passage plus a substantial second day at sea; from Misool — the closest Raja Ampat group — the passage is meaningfully shorter, which is why Misool-first routes are the efficient way to build the trip. Expect at least one continuous passage of twenty-four hours or more in each direction unless you fly into Kaimana.
Kaimana has a small airport with limited domestic connections, usually via Ambon or Sorong, on schedules that change frequently and cannot be treated as reliable. If your route ends at Kaimana rather than returning to Sorong, build in a buffer day and expect a connection rather than a direct flight. For comparison, Sorong (SOQ) itself sits roughly four to four and a half hours from Jakarta (CGK), about two hours from Makassar (UPG), and one and a half to two hours from Manado (MDC).

Raja Ampat’s government charges apply for the Raja Ampat portion of any combined route: a marine park entry permit of IDR 700,000 per foreign visitor (IDR 425,000 for Indonesians, valid twelve months, multi-entry) plus a regency visitor entry ticket of IDR 1,000,000 (IDR 300,000 for Indonesians) — roughly IDR 1,700,000 for a foreign guest. What are the conservation and etiquette rules?
The bagan platforms are working fishing infrastructure and people live on them. The etiquette that good crews enforce, and that we would ask any guest to accept:
- Approach the platform only with the crew’s arrangement and the fishermen’s consent. Never climb aboard uninvited.
- No touching, riding or blocking the path of a whale shark. Stay off the animal’s head and out of its way; let it come to you.
- Limit the number of people in the water at once — good operators rotate in small groups rather than putting twenty guests in simultaneously.
- No feeding of wildlife by guests, and no encouraging fishermen to alter their practice for a photo.
- Standard Indonesian marine-protection conduct applies throughout: no fishing or collecting in no-take zones, no touching or standing on coral, no anchoring on reef, and respect for village customs ashore.
These are not decorative rules. Whale-shark tourism at fishing platforms is fragile — it works because the fishermen tolerate it, and it stops working the moment guests treat a working boat as an attraction. Frequently asked questions
Can I book Triton Bay as a standalone week?
Only by charter, and only when a suitable vessel is already in the region. There is no reliable scheduled seven-night Triton Bay product out of Sorong; anyone advertising one weekly is describing an aspiration.
Are whale shark encounters guaranteed?
No. They are among the more consistent whale-shark encounters in Indonesia because the platforms attract juveniles year-round, but platform positions move and animals come and go. Any guarantee is a sales tactic.
How is visibility compared to Raja Ampat?
Generally lower. Triton Bay’s water is nutrient-rich and often green, which is precisely what feeds the soft coral. Raja Ampat typically offers 15 to 30 metres or more; Triton often delivers less, with better macro subjects in exchange.
Is Triton Bay suitable for snorkellers?
Partially. The whale-shark encounters happen in shallow water and are excellent for confident snorkellers. The soft-coral walls and macro sites are diving propositions. A snorkel-only guest would find the trip thin — see our snorkelling itinerary instead.
When is the best time to go?
Crossings and charters reaching Triton Bay generally fall in the shoulder and repositioning windows around the October-to-April Raja Ampat season. Because the trips are so few, the practical answer is: whenever a suitable departure exists.
Can we combine Triton Bay with the Banda Sea?

How experienced should divers be?
Advanced with good buoyancy. Sites are not extreme-current in the Blue Magic sense, but low visibility, macro work and platform diving all reward competence. Beginners are better served in the Dampier Strait.
What about walking sharks?
Epaulette sharks are a genuine feature of night diving in the region and are among the reasons photographers make the journey. As with everything wild, frequency varies by site and night.
