When is the best time to sail Raja Ampat?
October to April is the prime sailing season, with light winds, calm seas and the best underwater visibility. The Dampier Strait stays sheltered for most of this window, while Wayag and Misool passages are most comfortable from November to March. The June–September south-east monsoon brings swell to exposed southern waters, so few charters operate then.
Can I bareboat charter in Raja Ampat?
In practice, no. Raja Ampat has no bareboat charter base, large areas remain poorly charted, and marine park conditions require experienced local crew aboard. All charters here are skippered or fully crewed. Qualified sailors are welcome at the helm, and several yachts offer structured seamanship tuition — sail trim, passage planning and anchoring — during the voyage.
Where do Raja Ampat sailing charters depart from?
Most charters board at Sorong harbour, about 20 minutes from Domine Eduard Osok Airport, which connects daily via Jakarta and Makassar. Some departures use Waisai on Waigeo Island, reached by a two-hour public ferry from Sorong. Airport-to-jetty transfers are arranged with your booking, and embarkation is usually scheduled for early afternoon on day one.
