Whole-boat charter in Raja Ampat starts at roughly USD 4,500 per night for smaller Phinisi and motor yachts, and reaches USD 8,000–12,000 or more per night for flagship luxury vessels. What that buys is not a bigger cabin — it is control: your own route, your own timings, your own guest list, and a crew working to your schedule rather than to a fixed itinerary. For groups of eight or more the per-person maths often lands close to buying individual cabins, while the experience is not remotely comparable.
There is a moment on every shared liveaboard when the group’s schedule and your preferences diverge. You want a second dive at Magic Mountain; the boat is due north at three. You want to sleep in; the tender leaves at six. Chartering the whole vessel removes that friction permanently. It is the single biggest upgrade available in Raja Ampat, and it is more attainable than most people assume once you count heads.

Festive dates — the Christmas and New Year window in particular — price above these bands, sometimes substantially, and often carry minimum-night requirements.
Why charter rather than book cabins?
The rate card is the least interesting reason. The real ones:
- Custom routing. Scheduled trips follow proven loops. A charter can go where the loops do not: Batanta’s macro and mangrove sites, Kofiau on a genuinely exploratory leg, Aljui Bay’s pearl farm, or three consecutive days at one Misool pinnacle if that is what your photographers want. Batanta and Kofiau are rarely standard stops in published Raja Ampat schedules — they exist as private-charter extensions, not as scheduled products, and we will not pretend otherwise.
- Your own clock. Dawn dives for the keen, late breakfasts for the rest, a sunset that nobody cuts short.
- No strangers. On an eleven-night trip in a confined space, this matters more than any brochure will say.
- Shore programming. Beach dinners, sandbank set-ups, a chef briefed to your family’s food, a birthday nobody else has to sit through.
- Mixed-ability groups. Divers, snorkellers, non-swimmers and children can all be served in parallel when the tenders and guides are yours alone.
Who charters whole boats in Raja Ampat?
In our experience, five groups dominate. Multigenerational families — grandparents who want a comfortable deck, teenagers who want to dive, parents who want neither to compromise. Dive clubs and buddy groups of ten to sixteen, usually chasing a long route and a high dive count. Corporate retreats and incentive groups, where the boat becomes both venue and accommodation. Wedding parties and vow renewals, typically on shorter four- to six-night routes near the central islands. Photography and film workshops, which need to sit on a site far longer than a scheduled trip allows.

How do cabins work when you take the whole boat?
Differently, and more sensibly, than on a shared trip. The standard Raja Ampat cabin hierarchy — master or owner’s suite, deluxe or double, superior, twin, front cabin — exists to price berths individually. On a charter, the whole vessel is one price, so cabin allocation becomes a private matter for your group rather than a commercial one. Single travellers inside the charter pay no supplement, because there is no supplement to pay.
Practical guidance we give charter groups: put the light sleepers in the lower-deck twins (quietest, coolest, least motion), give the front cabins to people who do not mind movement on overnight legs, and reserve the master for whoever is paying — or for the couple celebrating something. If your group is smaller than the vessel’s capacity, you can simply leave cabins empty; many charter groups of eight take a twelve-guest boat purely for the space.
How do you build an 11-night private route?
Start with the fixed points: Sorong (SOQ) in and out, and roughly two to three overnight repositioning legs. Then choose two of the three corners — Misool, the central Dampier Strait, and Wayag in the north — or take all three if you accept that each costs a passage night. From there we layer in what a scheduled boat cannot: an extra day at Magic Mountain, a Batanta macro morning, a private beach dinner on a Misool sandbank, a pearl-farm visit in Aljui Bay.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum charter length?
Most vessels set a three- or four-night minimum in Raja Ampat, rising to five or more over the festive period. Anything shorter loses too much of the charter to transit.
How many people do we need for a charter to make sense?
Around eight. Below that, the per-person cost usually exceeds a boutique cabin fare — though couples who want total privacy charter small yachts anyway, and we will price both so you can decide.
Can we bring our own dive instructor or photographer?
Yes, subject to the vessel’s insurance and a berth being available. Groups often bring their own guide or videographer; we handle the arrangement with the boat.
Can we choose the menu?
On a charter, largely yes. Provisioning happens in Sorong before departure, so menu preferences, dietary restrictions and any special requests need to reach the galley well before embarkation day — not on it.
Is a fuel surcharge normal?
It is common on long or unusual routes. Some operators fold it into the nightly rate; others itemise it. Always ask which model a quote uses before comparing prices between vessels.
Can we visit Kofiau or Batanta?
On a charter, yes — that is exactly what charters are for. Neither appears reliably on scheduled loops. Batanta offers macro and mangrove diving; Kofiau is genuinely exploratory and needs the route built around it.
What happens if weather forces a change?
The captain re-routes and, on a charter, consults you as it happens. Northern legs to Wayag are always weather dependent; sheltered alternatives in the Fam group, Kabui Bay and Aljui Bay are close at hand.
Is satellite internet available?
On a growing number of vessels, yes — it has become a genuine differentiator at the top of the Raja Ampat market. Bandwidth is shared and sometimes scheduled. If a working connection matters to your group, tell us and we will filter the fleet accordingly.
Can we charter for a wedding or vow renewal?
Yes, and it is a common request. We can arrange decoration, a beach or deck set-up, a celebrant in some cases and a photographer. We do not over-promise legal formalities — Indonesian marriage law is its own project and we will say so plainly rather than sell you a fantasy.
Do all guests need dive insurance?
All divers do — cover including chamber treatment and evacuation. Non-diving guests should carry standard travel insurance with medical evacuation, given how remote the cruising ground is.
