Cape Kri is the site with the reputation. A researcher-led fish count there produced one of the highest single-dive species totals ever recorded anywhere, which is where Raja Ampat’s biodiversity claim originates. We deliberately do not print the exact number on this page — it circulates in several versions online — but the underlying point stands: nowhere else in the world gets close.

The numbers matter more than the poetry here. Sorong to the Dampier Strait is roughly four to six hours of motor-sailing; once you are inside the cruising ground, moves between anchorages run one to six hours and are usually taken during a meal or a surface interval. Nothing on this route requires a long open-water passage — which is exactly why it suits people who are new to liveaboard travel or who are travelling with children.

Who does the Dampier Strait suit?
It suits first-time visitors to Raja Ampat, divers who want maximum dives per day rather than maximum miles, snorkellers and mixed dive/non-dive groups, families with teenagers, and anyone with only five to eight days of leave. Friwen Wall, Arborek and Yenbuba are shallow enough that a competent snorkeller sees nearly everything a diver does.

How do you get there and what are the fees?
All Dampier charters board in Sorong. The airport’s IATA code is SOQ (you will see “DEO” used locally — that is the airport’s name abbreviation, not the booking code). Approximate flight times: Jakarta (CGK) four to four and a half hours, often overnight or via a transit; Makassar (UPG) about two hours; Manado (MDC) around one and a half to two hours. Garuda, Batik Air, Lion Air and Citilink all serve the route, though schedules change frequently, so we ask guests to arrive the day before departure rather than on the morning of it.
Two government charges apply and are separate from your fare: the marine park entry permit at IDR 700,000 for foreign nationals (IDR 425,000 for Indonesians, valid twelve months, multi-entry) and the regency visitor entry ticket at IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners (IDR 300,000 for Indonesians). Typical foreigner total: around IDR 1,700,000. Figures as of July 2026, confirmed at booking. The vessel arranges both. Raja Ampat is a regional marine protected area network, not a national park — a distinction worth knowing when you read competitor copy.

Frequently asked questions
How many dives per day are there on a Dampier charter?
Three day dives plus an optional night dive is the standard on dive-led vessels. Because the anchorages are close together, few dives are lost to travelling — one reason this route delivers more logged dives per night than any other in Raja Ampat.
Are the currents dangerous?
They are strong and they are the reason the fish are there. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef and Blue Magic are current sites dived on a schedule set by tide tables, with a reef hook and a negative entry. Guides brief every dive and will move the site rather than push an unsafe entry. Divers with fewer than about twenty logged dives should say so at booking so guiding can be arranged accordingly.
Can non-divers enjoy this route?

Are manta rays guaranteed at Manta Sandy?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. Manta Sandy is a genuine cleaning station with frequent reef manta activity, but sightings are seasonal and daily. Encounter rates through the December to March peak are high; nobody controls them.
What water temperature and visibility should I expect?
Typically 27–30 °C water and 15–30 metres or more of visibility, reduced near mangroves and in plankton-rich water. A 3 mm wetsuit suits most guests for three dives a day.
When is the season?
Roughly October to April, with peak demand December to March. Most vessels reposition out of Raja Ampat during the mid-year months.
How far in advance should I book?
For December to March departures, six to twelve months. Cabins on smaller boutique vessels go first, and the master and deluxe cabins go before the twins.
Can I combine the Dampier Strait with Piaynemo?
