A Wayag sailing charter is a 9- to 11-night voyage from Sorong (SOQ) into the far north of Raja Ampat, built around the karst labyrinth and lagoon of Wayag, the reefs and drop-offs of neighbouring Kawe, and the classic Dampier Strait sites on the way up and back. Nine nights is the practical minimum because the northern legs are run overnight. Indicative pricing sits between roughly USD 250 and 400 per person per night on mid-range vessels and USD 600 to 700 on boutique yachts, with luxury Phinisi higher again. Departures cluster between October and April.
Wayag is the image most people carry in their heads before they ever reach Raja Ampat: a maze of mushroom-shaped limestone islets rising out of turquoise shallows, seen from a viewpoint reached by a short, sharp scramble. What almost no one tells you before booking is that Wayag sits a long way north of the busy central islands, and that reaching it honestly costs you nights at sea. Why does Wayag need a longer trip?
Most Raja Ampat sailing itineraries board in Sorong and reach the Dampier Strait the same afternoon — roughly four to six hours of motor-sailing. From there, moves between central anchorages take one to six hours, which is why a short trip can cover a lot of ground. The northern group is different. Repositioning from the Dampier Strait or the Fam Islands up to Wayag and Kawe is normally run overnight, so guests wake at the next destination rather than spending a daylight day watching open water. That overnight leg happens twice: once going north, once coming back.
Do the arithmetic and a four- or five-night boat simply cannot include Wayag without gutting everything else. Published schedules that promise Wayag on a short cruise are usually either quoting a seaplane transfer, a separate day trip out of Waisai, or hoping you will not notice the change when the itinerary is revised. We would rather tell you upfront: on our boats, Wayag starts at nine nights. If you have fewer nights, the Dampier Strait charter is the better use of your time.
What do you actually do in Wayag?
Wayag is a landscape destination more than a dive-dense one. The days there look like this:
- The main viewpoint hike. A short but steep clamber over sharp limestone — gloves and closed shoes make it far more pleasant — ending on a ridge that looks down over the lagoon and its scattered islets.
- Lagoon and sandbank time. Tender cruising through the karst channels, swimming off a sandbank at low water, kayaking or paddleboarding where conditions allow.
- Shallow reef snorkelling. Fringing reefs and coral bommies in clear, calm water — excellent for photography and for guests who are not divers.
- Kawe. The neighbouring island group is where the northern diving happens: reefs, walls and drop-offs with better fish action than Wayag proper. Most northern routes give Kawe at least a full day.

Why do itineraries call Wayag “weather dependent”?
Because it is. The northern crossing is exposed, and a route that reads beautifully on paper in October can be uncomfortable or unwise in a strong blow. Reputable operators — including the vessels we charter — treat Wayag as a target rather than a contractual promise, and adjust to conditions rather than to the calendar. If the north closes, the standard substitution is more time in the Fam group, Kabui Bay and Aljui Bay, all of which are sheltered and genuinely good.
Two things follow from that. First, avoid any operator who guarantees Wayag in writing on a fixed date; they are either lucky or careless. Second, build a day of slack into your flights home. What permits and fees apply?
Raja Ampat is not a national park. It is a network of regionally managed marine protected areas (KKPD), and there are two separate charges — a point that trips up a lot of first-time visitors reading bundled figures online.

Who is a northern charter right for?
It suits travellers on a second Raja Ampat trip, photographers and drone flyers who want the karst landscape, mixed groups where not everyone dives, and anyone with eleven or more days of leave. It suits less well people with under a week available, guests who get seasick on overnight passages, or divers whose priority is maximum bottom time — those people get more dives per dollar staying central, or going south to Misool.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wayag included on every Raja Ampat sailing trip?
No. Wayag appears only on itineraries of about nine nights or longer, and even then it is scheduled as weather dependent. Trips of four to seven nights concentrate on the Dampier Strait and the Fam Islands.
Can I see Wayag on a 7-night charter?
Rarely, and not on a schedule we would sell you. Seven nights leaves no room for two overnight repositioning legs plus meaningful time in the north. If Wayag is the reason for your trip, book nine nights or more.
What are the best months for the northern route?
The core season runs from about October to April, with peak demand December to March. Within that window the north is chosen day by day according to sea state rather than by a fixed monthly rule.
How hard is the Wayag viewpoint hike?
Short — usually well under thirty minutes — but steep and over sharp, eroded limestone with some hand-over-hand sections. Reasonable fitness, closed shoes and gloves are all you need. Guests who prefer not to climb stay with the tender in the lagoon.
Can I fly a drone over Wayag?
Ask first, every time. There is no clearly published Raja Ampat-specific drone regulation in English; drone use follows Indonesian national aviation rules plus village and park permission, and many vessels restrict guest drones outright. Our crew will tell you where and when flying is acceptable.
Is there diving in Wayag itself?
Some, but the north is better known for scenery and snorkelling. The serious northern diving is at Kawe, which is why the two are always programmed together.
How rough is the overnight crossing?
Variable. On a settled night it is a gentle motor with most guests asleep; in a fresh breeze it can be lively. Bring motion-sickness remedies and take them before the passage rather than after.
What is the water like up north?
Typical Raja Ampat water temperature is around 27–30 °C year-round, with visibility commonly 15 to 30 metres or more, and lower near mangrove or plankton-rich water. A 3 mm suit is plenty for most guests; repeat divers often want a 5 mm.
How do you book a Wayag charter?
Cabins on nine- to eleven-night northern departures are the first to sell for the December to March window, often a year ahead.
