Where do Raja Ampat boats actually pick guests up?
At the harbour in Sorong, not in Raja Ampat. This surprises people who assume they must reach Waisai first. Sailing charters and liveaboards moor in Sorong, take guests aboard there, and make the four- to six-hour passage to the Dampier Strait during the first afternoon. The Waisai ferry is for homestay and resort guests; charter guests skip it entirely.
The transfer from SOQ to the harbour is a short drive — typically fifteen to thirty minutes depending on traffic and which berth your vessel is using. Reputable operators send a representative to meet you at arrivals with a name board. If nobody has told you who is meeting you and where, ask before you fly; it is a basic competence signal.

Read that table backwards and the reason for a pre-night is obvious: everything hinges on being at the harbour by late morning. A flight landing at 14:00 does not fit, and neither does a same-day connection with one weak link in it.
Where should you stay in Sorong?
Sorong has a functional spread of business hotels rather than resorts — think clean, air-conditioned, breakfast included, close to either the airport or the port. We deliberately do not publish a ranked hotel list here, because inventory and standards in a small port city change faster than any travel page updates, and a stale recommendation is worse than none. Ask your operator: any charter company running regular Sorong departures knows which properties are currently reliable and which have slipped.
What to optimise for, in order:
- Proximity to the airport or harbour. Sorong is not large, but boarding morning is not the time to discover traffic.
- Working air conditioning and hot water. The two things guests actually notice.
- Early breakfast or a packed one. Some boarding schedules start before a standard buffet opens.
- Luggage storage. Useful if you have a late return flight after disembarking.
What is worth doing with a spare afternoon?
Not much sightseeing, honestly — and that is fine, because the afternoon has a job. Use it for:
- Cash. Draw rupiah in Sorong. This is the last dependable ATM access before you sail. You will want cash for the entry fees if your operator collects them locally, for village purchases at Arborek, and for crew gratuities at the end.
- SIM card. Telkomsel has the widest coverage in Papua by a distance. Buy and register the card in Sorong with your passport; do not count on doing it at sea.
- Pharmacy. Seasickness tablets, rehydration salts, antihistamines, any prescription top-up. There is no pharmacy at anchor.
- Supplies. Snacks, a spare reef-safe sunscreen, batteries, a cheap dry bag if you forgot yours.
- Dive gear check. If a hose is weeping or a computer battery is low, Sorong is the last place with any chance of a fix.
Are permits handled in Sorong or onboard?
Usually onboard, or by an agent on your behalf. Raja Ampat requires two separate government charges — a marine park entry permit (IDR 700,000 for foreigners, valid twelve months and multi-entry) and a regency visitor entry ticket (IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners), as of July 2026 and confirmed at booking. Most crews collect payment in rupiah cash on boarding day and deal with the paperwork themselves.

How should you plan the departure day?
Most itineraries run the final leg overnight so you wake near Sorong. Breakfast is early, disembarkation is typically mid-morning, and the airport is a short drive. Afternoon domestic flights are comfortable; a same-day international connection out of Jakarta is not, and we routinely advise guests to overnight in Jakarta or Makassar rather than gamble a long-haul on a domestic leg.
If your flight is late in the day, ask about a day room or luggage storage at a Sorong hotel. Sitting in the terminal for seven hours after a week at sea is a sad way to end a good trip.
